Västerås: Grekiska Kolgrillsbaren Review (Greek Restaurant)

Last night, Nick and I went out for date night to Västerås' Greek restaurant, Grekiska Kolgrillsbaren - direct translation is Greek charcoal grill and bar. We arrived around 7:30, and had no problem getting a table as the restaurant was fairly quiet on a Wednesday night.

dining room
The dining area was super cozy, with plenty of space between tables, candles on each table, and three beautiful chandeliers glowing over the booth tables. The restaurant was much darker than the picture, but of course I had to enhance it so you could see the dining room! I really enjoyed how there was lots of space between the tables- not only did you have plenty of room, but it gave the restaurant a very cozy feel. One of the best parts was that because you were so spread out, you didn't overhear other patron's conversations and could focus on what was happening at your own table.

garlic bread
Because Nick and I were fairly hungry, we ordered the garlic bread appetizer. Each of us received three pieces of garlic bread, which was cooked perfectly and was soft while having the perfect crunch.

Kycklingfilé Souvlaki- Grillspet
For dinner, I ordered my favorite Greek meal, the chicken kebabs. Last year in Karlskrona, Athena's Palace was one of our favorite restaurants because of this meal. The kebabs at Grekiska Kolgrillsbaren were absolutely delicious, and I chose to have them served with rice. It was a lot of food, but  I finished- and enjoyed- every last bite!

Fileto a la Greco
Nick ordered the steak for dinner, and said that it definitely exceeded his expectations. Served with potatoes and vegetables, there was enough food that Nick wasn't even able to finish the veggies! Of course, this is only because he saved a little bit of room for his favorite dessert…

baklavas
Nick ordered Baklavas to finish off his meal. When it arrived, both Nick and I were surprised by the portion size of it- it was just barely bigger than a bite size! It was also served with vanilla ice cream and fruit. I got to sample a bite, and it was delicious, despite being very small.

Overall, Nick and I had a terrific date night at Grekiska Kolgrillsbaren and I know we will be going back. The food was terrific, and our server was on point, even asking how everything was. One of the things we both miss while in Sweden is the customer service we have grown used to in the U.S., so it is always nice when we go to restaurants and have great, timely service. For a date night, the cozy atmosphere, quick service, and delicious food is everything we are looking for!

  2. I love Greek food so much! We have recently fell in love with a local Greek restaurant and I'm so glad there is one near by. I love how many vegetarian options there are with Greek food, especially the appetizers. This looks like a really cool restaurant. The chairs look really comfy and Iove that dim light atmosphere for date night :)

  3. I've only ever eaten Greek food in Greece, it doesn't seem to be available anywhere near where I live! I've never tried baklava though, it sounds so naughty, perhaps that's why it was so small, because it's so calorific? The atmosphere looks so cosy, I love restaurants that aren't lit like a fish tank!

    1. Sara, this was such a cozy restaurant, and like you said the lighting had to do a lot with it. There are tons of Greek restaurants here in Sweden, which I was surprised about when moving here!

  4. Yummy! I love ethnic food, especially when you're in that town/country! I think it is such a great experience and authentic as well. I have had some greek food before but nothing like the restaurant you went to, that one is so much more classy. I typically order the gyro but I would love to try what you just had. Looks like a beautiful place!

  5. I love Greek food, I first tried it on our holiday to Crete and I fell in love with it. The chicken kebabs look delicious, such a good choice. It's great that the steak exceeded Nick's expectations and that he couldn't even finish it because of the generous portion - something I always like to see. The restaurant decor looks really lovely too. I'm glad you both had a great night out.

  7. What a romantic date night. I think your hubby's dish looks delish!. I'm trying to figure out how the veggies were made, is that a veggie casserole? or pie? And the sauce on the side, are those mushrooms. It all looks so good. I love Greek food!

    1. Margarita, the sauce was a creamy mushroom sauce. He absolutely loved it! I'm not a mushroom fan so only had one tiny nibble, and it was so creamy and good!
