Review: Winters Hotel Berlin Mitte - Am Gendarmenmarkt

For Nick and I's Christmas trip to Berlin, we knew we wanted to stay in a very central area. Fortunately, because Nick had lived in Berlin for a year, he knew the perfect area of town to stay in. We chose the Winters Hotel Berlin Mitte - Am Gendarmenmarkt for our trip. From this location, we were able to walk nearly everywhere throughout town. Even when destinations were too far to walk to, the U-bahn was just 50 meters away!

Checking into the hotel was very quick and easy. To the side of the reception was a cozy bar and lounge area, with a few seats and the ability to purchase various drinks and snacks.

The rooms at Winters Hotel Berlin Mitte were very clean and organized. Of course, being a European hotel room, the rooms were quite small- we had the bed, two feet on either side and end tables, and that was pretty much it. One of the best features of the room is that the bed was not two beds pushed together (common for Europe), but an individual mattress. The bathroom was clean and to our surprise had a very nice, deep bathtub. The bathtub/shower had a half-wall to protect water from going on the floor, but it would have been nice to have a curtain so as to keep the floor from getting drenched.

The pros of Winters Hotel Berlin Mitte:
  • Great location!
  • Clean Rooms
  • Maid service left fresh towels for us, which was a pleasant surprise as we forgot our 'do not disturb' sign on the door while out.
  • Friendly employees willing to help & answer questions
Cons of Winters Hotel Berlin Mitte:
  • Very small rooms- while this is common in Europe, even a little bit of extra space would have been appreciated.
  • No shower curtain, so the floor does get damp during showers.
  • The street is quite loud- while not a problem in the winter, this could be a problem during the summers.
  • Did not reply to my e-mail with a question I had several weeks prior to staying
Overall, our stay at Winters Hotel Berlin Mitte - Am Gendarmenmarkt was a very pleasant stay and we would go back to the hotel again. When you combine the fabulous location with the reasonable prices, I feel this hotel couldn't be beat. The hotel rooms had everything we needed (and not much more) which is perfectly fine by me. After all, who goes on vacation to spend tons of time in the hotel room? My stay at the Winters Hotel was a good one, and deserves a good review!

    1. The location of Winters was perfect! The only restaurant we went to that was super close to the hotel was Augustiner Brauhäus for classic Bavarian food. My best recommendation for when you go to Berlin is to go the "The Bird" (I'll be doing a review of it later!). Solar was also a cool restaurant with great views of the city!

  2. That looks like such a modern place to stay. I love the bathroom. A meter is 3 feet, right? As you know, here in the US we don't measure in meters :)

    1. That's what we thought! We don't go on vacation to stay in the hotel room anyways, so small rooms don't bother me.

    1. Miranda- the room size never bothers me, especially since my husband and I don't mind because we only use hotel rooms to sleep. I always find it amusing that Americans frequently complain about small hotel rooms over here- its just different!

    1. Chrystal- haha, it is such a Euro way of making the bed! Over here, they don't really have comforters big enough for the whole bed, so you get two individual ones.

  23. Berlin is an awesome city, and full of great hotels and transportation! I went last year, and really enjoyed the feel and rhythm of the city. It has an edgy 'black sheep' feel (esp compared to say, Munich), but is a great juxtaposition of history and modern architecture... glad you had a fun time!

  25. Although I haven't been to Europe in quite a while, I agree that the rooms do tend to be quite small. The last time I went I was on a tight budget, so there was quite a bit of culture shock when comparing American rooms of the same price.

    1. Cher- even still, the rooms are quite small. Fortunately, my husband and I don't mind as we only sleep & shower in the rooms- it is just different from the US is all!
